On July 14, Republican Lori Chavez-DeRemer, former mayor of Happy Valley, announced her candidacy for Oregon's 5th Congressional District, a seat held by Democrat Kurt Schrader since 2009.

Chavez-DeRemer hopes to win the Republican primary next May for the opportunity to run in the November 2022 general election. Oregon's 5th District includes most of Clackamas and Marion counties, along with a stretch of territory extending to the coast, although these boundaries are expected to change with redistricting in response to the 2020 census and the state's new 6th Congressional District.

"For the past year, I've watched Portland being destroyed and looted while radical politicians treat rioters better than our brave men and women in law enforcement," Chavez-DeRemer said. "I cannot sit and watch my state, where my twin girls grew up, continue to crumble because of the radical left defund-the-police mob. Oregon needs a fighter in Congress and I'm ready to step up — law and order must prevail."

Chavez-DeRemer served as mayor of Happy Valley from 2010-18, leading Oregon's fastest growing city. She successfully advocated that city voters pass several police levies to fund law enforcement, balanced the city budget and approved zoning changes for affordable housing options. She was Happy Valley's first female Latina elected mayor.

"I am the granddaughter of a brave woman who understood the importance of hard work and gratitude," Chavez-DeRemer said. "Her family came here from Mexico, legally, in pursuit of the American dream and to live in the greatest country in the world. We're missing that sense of patriotism in our country today, and I vow to promote America First policies as Oregon's next Congresswoman."

Chavez-DeRemer and her husband, Shawn, have been married for 30 years and own and operate several medical clinics in the Pacific Northwest. They have twin 26-year-old daughters, Annie and Emilie.
