The Veterans Council of Northwest Arkansas broke ground on the Veterans Wall of Honor expansion Saturday. According to the president of the council Roger Armstrong, space on the current monument filled up in 2015.
"We wanted to build additional space so we can capture those individuals that we have not recognized yet and who served Afghanistan and the Middle Eastern wars," Armstrong said.
The expansion plans feature five new pods for additional names, representing the five branches of the military.
"It is just a great place of reflection and a wonderful thing we all can enjoy as families, and now it is going to get bigger and even better," Sen. John Boozman told 40/29 News.
The first section is expected to be completed in May, according to Armstrong.
"We are pushing to get the first pod built and dedicated by May 30. Then we feel hopeful that will generate more donations and more interest in the monument and that will generate the funding so we can go on and build pods two three four and five," he said.
Armstrong predicts the cost of the project to be north of $1 million. It will be funded through donations, fundraising, and grants.
