“I thank Leader McCarthy for nominating me to serve as one of two Congressional Representatives to the U.N. General Assembly. I look forward to engaging with our allies and building on my work in Congress by promoting American interests abroad, strengthening international financial institutions, and promoting religious freedom globally. This appointment comes at a pivotal time, as all eyes are on Afghanistan and the future governance of that nation. I am honored to represent Congress and advance American values around the world alongside my colleague, Rep. Barbara Lee of California.”

The U.N. General Assembly annual session is held in New York City each year. The President typically appoints one Democrat and one Republican to serve as U.S. representatives to the session, alternating each year between the House and Senate. Congressional representation has a long history at the U.N. going back to the 1945 San Francisco Conference on International Organization that led to the adoption of the U.N. Charter. Following the adoption of the charter, Congress passed the United Nations Participation Act, to provide legislative authority for U.S. engagement in the United Nations.
