Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to remain at half-staff through sunset on Sunday, July 10, 2022, in honor and remembrance of the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. Shinzo was assassinated in Japan.
“I’m saddened by the tragic death of former Japan Prime Minister Abe Shinzo,” said Gov. Reynolds. “He was a great leader who cared so deeply for his nation and for unity. Kevin and I join with Iowans in sending our condolences to the Shinzo family and the people of Japan.”
The governor’s order is issued in conjunction with President Biden’s proclamation to lower all United States flags to half-staff for the same length of time. Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.
Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flags at half-staff for the same length of time.
- Flags are currently lowered on Friday, July 8, 2022 for the shootings in Highland Park, Illinois and in honor of a WWII veteran from Iowa.
- Flags should remain lowered on Saturday, July 9, 2022 for the shootings in Highland Park, Illinois, in honor of a fallen soldier from Iowa, and the assassination of Abe Shinzo.
- Flags should remain lowered on Sunday, July 10, 2022 for the assassination of Abe Shinzo.
- Flags should remain lowered until sunset on Monday, July 11, 2022 in honor of fallen Coralville Police Sergeant John Williams.
