Outagamie County Executive and environmental champion U.S. Senate candidate Tom Nelson today condemned the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling effectively undermining the Clean Air Act and reiterated his call to expand the Supreme Court.

Nelson, who has been endorsed by Sunrise Wisconsin, renewed his call to end the filibuster in the Senate and said Congress needs to strengthen the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulatory powers by enacting a “Blue-Green New Deal” to reduce emissions and create jobs.

Following is his statement reacting to the decision in West Virginia vs. E.P.A.:

“In so severely undermining the Clean Air Act today, the Supreme Court has issued a death sentence for Planet Earth unless Congress and the Biden administration act quickly.

“Just as pro-lifers tirelessly sought the demise of Roe, the fossil fuel cabal has been plotting this moment for decades. This decision defies the overwhelming sentiments of Americans who are watching the world burning, flooding and being blown away due to climate change, while the EPA is near-powerless to stop it.

“This Court – and Senators like Ron Johnson – have shown that they are totally incapable of doing what’s best for the health and well-being of the American people and our planet. After all, Ron Johnson has said that climate change is ‘bs.’

“Instead of despair, it’s time to act. If elected, I will work to end the filibuster so we can pass meaningful legislation that cracks down on greenhouse gases while creating new American jobs in a ‘Blue-Green New Deal.’ I’ll also support expanding the court to restore balance to this radicalized Court and fight to remove Clarence Thomas for his clear ethical violations. And I will support the administration NOW as it works through the rubble to save its ability to regulate the industries who refuse to confront our climate crisis.

“Once again, the Supreme Court is upending American life and well-being on behalf of well-organized corporate special interests. But there’s no time to despair – it’s time to fight.”
