It may be Friday the 13th, but it’s still Friday. And that means it’s time for the Beasley Beat!

This week, Cheri headed to Wilmington, NC to tour small businesses and meet with their owners: Pomegranate Books, an independent bookstore located in the historic Borkenhagen House in the Winter Park neighborhood; Sweet D’s Cuisine, a family-owned and operated bakery; and Swahili Coast, a fair trade shop that partners with artisans in East Africa to craft ethically handmade accessories.

Cheri spoke with owners about their experiences staying open during the pandemic and the challenges posed by damaging hurricane seasons. They talked about the importance of tackling the climate crisis and investing in our infrastructure to not only upgrade our roads and bridges but bolster our economy.

Cheri also spoke today with county commissioners at the North Carolina Association of Black County Officials Banquet.
