RALEIGH: Last week, outlets reported on dramatically rising rental prices across the country, especially in North Carolina. ABC 11 reported that North Carolina’s rental prices are increasing faster than the national average, noting that the average cost of rent rose by 20% in the last year.

The article highlighted a growing problem North Carolinians across the state are facing: “As monthly expenses go up, many are not seeing an increase in wages to assist with rising housing costs, which leaves many families dedicated more income to housing.”

Cheri Beasley has called for affordable homeownership and high-quality, affordable rental options for North Carolinians. Recognizing housing affordability as critical to North Carolinians’ needs and well-being, in the Senate, Beasley would fight to lower costs for North Carolinians and expand investment in affordable housing, especially for vulnerable groups including seniors, low-income families, and veterans. She also has called for investments for repairs and upgrades for existing affordable housing units and developing climate-resilient housing and infrastructure.

Beasley has a strong track record for standing up for North Carolinians. As Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, Beasley took action during the COVID-19 pandemic and created a first-of-its-kind mediation program with tenants and landlords to help people stay in their homes.

“North Carolinians across the state are being hit hard by rising costs, including housing costs. While Washington fails to act, Cheri Beasley is hearing from North Carolinians about the struggles they face in accessing affordable housing,” said Dory MacMillan, spokeswoman for the Cheri Beasley campaign. “In the Senate, Cheri will stand up for North Carolinians, fight to lower costs, and invest in affordable housing.”
