RALEIGH: Today, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Cheri Beasley shared this statement following Washington’s failure to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and protect women’s constitutional rights:

Over the last year, we’ve seen state legislatures across the country introduce more than 100 laws aimed at restricting a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions. After more than 20 years on the bench, including as Chief Justice of our state’s highest court, I know that reproductive freedom is not only a well-established precedent but also a constitutional right that must be protected.

It is a failure of the U.S. Senate and North Carolina’s senators that this protection was not recognized today, and if elected, I will fight to make sure this precedent is not only upheld but the law of the land.
