RALEIGH: News outlets have consistently reported on Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Cheri Beasley’s focus on “strengthening the economy” in North Carolina.

Throughout her campaign, news outlets have reported on Beasley’s focus on fighting for lower costs amid rising prices, noting that she “would hold corporations accountable” by imposing a “price-gouging penalty” to ensure companies aren’t “flagrantly price gouging and raising costs at a time when people are struggling.” Beasley has also highlighted the importance of creating a “Made in America economy” that will help lower costs, grow jobs, and ensure that events abroad do not disrupt supply chains at home.

In addition, outlets have noted Beasley’s commitment to fighting for policies “to support working families.” Highlighting her implementation of “paid family leave policy for court employees,” Beasley has called for implementing paid family leave at a federal level. She has also called to make the Child Tax Credit permanent, which she said will “swift support for families who need it most and will help lift children out of poverty.” Recognizing that access to childcare has been a major factor in whether people can return to work after the pandemic, Beasley has called for expanding “access to affordable child care, including through universal pre-kindergarten” to support “working families.”

In addition to championing policies to support working families and lower prices, outlets note that Beasley has highlighted the need to grow “good-paying jobs” to North Carolina and raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. And as Beasley continues to champion efforts to strengthen the economy in her U.S. Senate campaign, workers are throwing their support behind her. Major organizations including the NC State AFL-CIO, the North Carolina Association of Educators, the Communication Workers of America, and the State Employees Association of North Carolina have endorsed her candidacy, recognizing that she will fight for workers and “fight with us, not against us.”

“So many people care deeply about costs and lowering those costs,” Beasley explained on her motivation for running. “So many families are challenged right now, and as I’m speaking to people across the state, they want a senator who is going to fight to make sure they have access to health care, and strengthen the economy here in this state, and be responsive to their needs.”

Beasley’s office says the SEANC works to advocate for current and former employees who’ve “dedicated their lives to service the state of North Carolina.”

SEANC joins organizations and leaders, including Gov. Roy Cooper, Attorney General Josh Stein, and others in endorsing Beasley for the position.

“In a state where so many of our people lack affordable health care and good-paying jobs, SEANC plays a critical role in advocating for state employees, and as a former state employee myself, I am so grateful to have earned their endorsement,” Beasley said.

Beasley is an advocate for raising the minimum wage to $15 and she believes that “we just got to do it”. Beasley talked about creating jobs commonly sourced from other countries and implementing them here in the state of NC.

“The key to that is making sure we have good paying jobs here in North Carolina. Also understanding that China is one of our greatest economic competitors and so many of those jobs that are over there, need to stay here in the state so that people can take care of their families,” Beasley said. “Also, we have the talent here in the state to carry out those jobs.”

People care a whole lot about inflation, jobs and growing a strong economy, I would have to say voting rights are fundamental. They are constitutional, foundational rights and we need to make sure they are secured and protected.”

She has an idea of how to handle issues like inflation, rising gas prices, healthcare, and more.

“I would hold corporations accountable, we certainly need a price-gouging penalty, because it is completely unfair when corporations are gouging anytime, really, but especially now. And I think we also really must focus on a Made in America economy, to make sure that when there are these kinds of things happening overseas, that we are less reliant, that we’re making our own goods around semiconductors and so much more providing training for workers.”
