Joy Hofmeister for Governor: Their Decision, My Decision

Oklahoma

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Since this campaign began, I’ve spoken with people across Oklahoma — and across the political spectrum — about the challenges they’re facing, and how a governor can help make their lives better. In recent months, more and more people have come up to me to share their profound worries about a Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

That decision is now here, and it has many implications. My most immediate concern is what it means for Oklahoma women, their families, and their healthcare providers.

I have been clear about my position on abortion: I am personally pro-life. But I believe this decision is about healthcare and should be made between a woman and her doctor — and it needs to stay that way.

I don’t support extremism on this issue from either side. Unfortunately, extremism is what Governor Stitt has decided we should live under in Oklahoma.

Stitt has aligned himself with people who don’t care about protecting the lives of mothers. He is standing with ideologues who make no exceptions for terrible scenarios many women will face. And he is siding with bounty hunters who can exploit vulnerable women and doctors to make money.

The court has said that abortion access should be decided at the state level. My decision is to work as hard as I can to ensure Oklahoma has reasonable, responsible leadership who protects women, families, and doctors.

We can’t allow the extremist fringes, on this and so many other issues, to overwhelm the Oklahoma values that so many of us hold dear. I hope you’ll stand with me and our growing coalition as we work hard to restore reason, problem solving, and compassion to our state.

On a difficult day for so many, it’s energizing to know how many people across the state are willing to step up for a better future.

Thank you,

Joy
