Today, Rep. Val Demings called on Marco Rubio to condemn the right-wing extremist rally at the U.S. Capitol planned for Saturday, September 18th. CBS News reports that the rally is expected to be well attended by far-right extremist militia groups, including the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.
“Senator Rubio, your failure to condemn this rally enables these extremists, stokes division, and endangers our democracy,” said Congresswoman Demings. “You are condoning this rally against our democracy.”
“There are no ‘both sides’ to defend here – these protestors are aligned with right-wing extremist militia groups and they are coming to challenge the fundamental principles of our democracy with intimidation, and possible violence.
“As a former police officer, I have been dismayed by Senator Rubio’s failure to stand up for the U.S. Capitol Police, the National Guard, and other brave Americans defending the Capitol in the face of this threat.
“If Senator Rubio had any political courage, he would condemn this demonstration and its aims for what it is: a threat to public safety and to our democracy.”
