TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly today distributed food to dozens of Kansas kids at Seaman School District’s Logan Elementary School in Topeka to highlight the Summer Food Service Program. The program, administered through the Kansas Department of Education, provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to keep children fed during the months they’re not in school.
“Summer meal programs help ensure our kids don’t go hungry and support their ability to succeed in and out of the classroom,” said Governor Kelly. “That’s why I’ve long supported these programs and recently called on Congress to extend waivers that feed more Kansas kids.”
In June of this year, Governor Kelly urged Congress to extend the federal Child Nutrition Waivers to give schools more flexibility and resources to feed students through programs like the Summer Food Service Program. Congress passed bipartisan legislation to extend the waivers a few weeks later.
