Meijer Statement on House Gun Reform Votes

U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI) this week voted against a series of gun control reform bills. He released the following statement:

“The recent events in Buffalo and Uvalde were utterly horrific and have understandably led to calls for a response from Congress – this response must be both comprehensive and bipartisan in order to be signed into law. Instead, this week, the House rushed to vote on a package of bills without meaningful bipartisan input and clear constitutional protections. I am encouraged by the ongoing bipartisan conversations in the Senate about comprehensive legislation to address gun violence, our country’s mental health crisis, and the security needs of our public institutions. I am actively monitoring these discussions and look forward to reviewing their work product.

“Regarding H.R. 2377, I have fundamental concerns with the federal government taking the lead on enforcement of extreme risk protection orders via federal courts that are poorly equipped to tackle this challenge. Nineteen states have already implemented their own ERPO laws without overreaching federal mandates. State and local governments, law enforcement entities, and courts are best equipped to establish and implement ERPOs – not the federal government via the U.S. Marshals Service. Any new legislative action on this issue should reflect the established constitutional principle of states authority of police powers.”
