U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI) today voted in favor of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. He released the following statement:
“When House Democrats rushed a series of gun control measures to the floor earlier this month, I strongly opposed these measures to strip away Americans’ Second Amendment right. But those unserious efforts begged the question of what a serious effort to address violence, mental health, and school safety would look like.
“Bipartisan efforts in the Senate – working closely with law enforcement and Second Amendment advocates – produced just that: the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. This legislation places an overwhelming focus on community mental health initiatives and school safety, with $300 million for the STOP School Violence Act.
“There is also funding that states can apply for to implement veteran, mental health, or drug courts or other crisis intervention services that ensure police can help individuals who pose a threat to themselves or to others while respecting due process and the right enshrined under the Second Amendment.
“One piece of legislation will not solve the broader issues of violence and mental health; that will require communities coming together to address social alienation, lack of purpose, and familial erosion. But this bill is a significant step in the right direction that will save lives, and I voted in favor of it today.”
