In 2020, the McGirt decision brought a long overdue recognition of Tribal sovereignty in Oklahoma and across the country. But yesterday, our Supreme Court, appearing to cave to political pressures and with a narrow majority, decided to roll back part of this significant step forward. Let’s be clear—yesterday’s ruling makes no one safer. It creates jurisdictional confusion and sets the stage for crimes on Native lands to go unpunished. The activist majority of our Supreme Court failed, or refused, to recognize the troubled history from which our treaties with Tribal Nations and federal law dictating law enforcement on Native lands derived.
We are all made stronger and safer by cooperating with and respecting our Tribal partners and their authority. As your U.S. Senator, I will stand with our Tribal Nations in Oklahoma and fight for measures that will restore the recognition of complete Tribal sovereignty, which we promised many years ago.
