Lexington, KY – Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) congratulated Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport on receiving nearly $15 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Blue Grass Airport received $10,500,000 from DOT’s Airport Improvement Program for runway rehabilitation.  The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which Congressman Barr voted in favor of, provided funding to increase the federal share of the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program to allow for safety enhancement projects to continue throughout the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the remaining $4,040,620 for Blue Grass Airport comes from the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriation Act (CRRSAA), which Congressman Barr also voted in favor of.  Signed into law in December 2020, this bipartisan effort included funding for eligible airports for economic relief and other measures to prevent, prepare for and respond to the ongoing pandemic.

“I am glad Blue Grass Airport was able to receive this funding,” said Congressman Barr.  “This is a great example of bipartisanship at work that truly benefits a vital resource to the Sixth District.  Blue Grass Airport is a top facility that connects Lexington to the rest of the world, and I am excited to know they can continue to provide a safe travel experience during and after this pandemic.”

“I thank Congressman Barr for supporting the legislation to make these enhancements possible,” said Blue Grass Airport Executive Director Eric Frankl.  “This funding will help to ensure we can maintain a critical asset for our local and state economy and allow Blue Grass Airport to continue as Central Kentucky’s gateway to the world.”
