WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig announced her submission for the city of West St. Paul to receive $3,100,000 for the Smith Avenue and Dodd Road Realignment Project. Craig submitted her request for Community Project Funding (CPF) for the Fiscal Year 2023 Appropriations process, through which Members of Congress are able to request funding for up to 15 specific projects in their districts which would serve the public good.
“I’m proud to announce my submission for West St. Paul to receive federal support for this important project,” said Representative Craig. “Realigning Smith Avenue and Dodd Road will not only make it a safer intersection for our drivers, bikers and pedestrians – but would also bring 900 construction jobs to our district while honoring Officer Scott Patrick’s sacrifice in the line of duty.”
“The Smith/Dodd realignment project is an amazing opportunity to redevelop and enhance an important part of West St. Paul. The project will increase safety at a busy intersection, create open space for the entire region to enjoy, and provide a place for people to remember the sacrifice of Mendota Heights Police Officer Scott Patrick who lost his life at the intersection in the line of duty,” said West St. Paul Mayor Dave Napier. “In addition - we expect the potential for over 700 new jobs and up to $100 million in new development including housing, retail and dining options - the City of West St Paul thanks Representative Craig for her support on this visionary project.”
Over 10,000 vehicles, pedestrians and bikers cross through the intersection of Smith Avenue and Dodd Road, and this much-needed realignment would ensure that they are all safely able to do so. Additionally, realigning these roads would pave the way to establishing a space for public gatherings and would create a memorial for Mendota Heights Police Officer, Scott Patrick, who was killed at this intersection in the line of duty. Finally, this project would result in the creation of 250 full-time and 750 part-construction jobs. Upon project completion, the area will be able to support over 100 permanent new jobs.
The House Appropriations Committee intends to fund community projects on a limited basis in the FY23 Appropriations bills. Therefore, CPF requests that address the most significant needs of local communities or provide a significant public good are more likely to be included. The CPF program is being implemented with accountability measures to ensure a responsible and transparent process.
