Bessemer, AL - Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) visited the FEMA Community Vaccination Center site in Bessemer, Alabama to encourage residents to get vaccinated. Rep. Sewell visited the site as part of the Congressional Black Caucus’ Get Out the Vaccine (GOTV) Week, a public awareness, education, and outreach program occurring in Congressional districts across the country.

“Today I was thrilled to participate in the Congressional Black Caucus’ Get Out the Vaccine Week by visiting the FEMA Community Vaccination Center in Bessemer,” said Rep. Sewell. “This partnership between the FEMA, the state of Alabama, and Jefferson County is a testament to what can be achieved when we all work together. Getting shots in arms is how we save lives and finally put this pandemic behind us.”

“I understand why so many have concerns about getting vaccinated given the legacy of distrust created by the federal government,” continued Sewell. “But I know this for a fact. The vaccine has been rigorously tested. It is safe, it is effective, and it will protect you, your loved ones, and our whole community. Don’t wait, vaccinate!”

Background on the American Rescue Plan

The American Rescue Plan is a $1.9 trillion stimulus package that continues to provide crucial aid to families, workers, and communities suffering from the health and economic crises caused by COVID-19. Among its many resources, funding from the legislation is putting shots in arms with a $20 billion coordinated, nationwide vaccine program to:

  • Make sure we have enough vaccines for all Americans through research, development, manufacturing, production, and purchase.
  • Get vaccines out to all Americans quickly and equitably through community vaccination centers, mobile vaccination units and more.
  • Improve communication to strengthen confidence in the vaccine and make sure all Americans know when, where and how they can get one.
