Congressman Cohen Commemorates Independence Day

In advance of Monday’s observance of America’s 246th birthday, Congressman Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement:

“When our founders signed the Declaration of Independence 246 years ago, they set us on a path to liberty and freedom that has become the envy of the world.  On Monday, as we gather with friends, family and neighbors for barbecues and fireworks, we will celebrate the legacy they left us: Our nation’s independence.

“Our long history includes many moments in which we had to correct our direction as we strived to be a more perfect union. These days, with reproductive rights, democracy and other fundamental rights under attack, we must remain vigilant and protect the freedoms we have won through great sacrifice. We’re seeing in the decisions from the Supreme Court and the hearings of the January 6th Committee that our liberties can be threatened and must be defended.

“Today, we see the need for further course corrections to address reproductive freedom, voter suppression, economic inequality, systemic racism, gun violence, climate change, and other vital issues. There is much more work ahead.

“I wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day.”
