Houston, Texas – Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) issued the following statement following the funeral service of 9-year-old shooting victim Arlene Alvarez.

“During Arlene Alvarez’s funeral service, I could feel the undeniable impact she had on the community. The tragic and sudden death of this beautiful and innocent little girl has shaken the Houston area. Today is a sad day for everyone, but the pain and suffering we feel pale in comparison to what her family is feeling. She was a beautiful and innocent child who had her whole life ahead of her, yet her life was cut short at the hands of gun violence.”

“She may no longer be with us, but her legacy will live on. More needs to be done to make community members, especially our children, safe from gun violence. We must do everything possible to ensure no other family experiences this type of gut-wrenching loss.”
