WASHINGTON—Yesterday, U.S. Representative John Rose (TN-6) voted to uphold the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens by casting votes against H.R. 8, "Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021" and H.R. 1446, "Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021."
"As a gun owner and lifetime National Rifle Association (NRA) member, I believe the right enshrined in the Second Amendment to our Constitution is straight forward and unambiguous. Quite simply, H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446 represent infringements to our right to keep and bear arms, which renders them unconstitutional and I voted "no" on both pieces of legislation.
"Like my friends and neighbors, I am concerned about violence and believe we should continue to address this problem, but we must do so without curtailing the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of law-abiding citizens. There are real solutions to violence and mass shootings, but instead of pursuing those solutions, House Democrats are choosing to legislate based on ideology rather than evidence. To combat violence, we must look at improvements to our mental health system as well as more effectively enforce the laws currently on the books to convict violent criminals.
"I will always stand strong for the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Tennesseans and will continue to fight for the freedoms guaranteed to us in the Constitution," said Representative Rose.
If enacted, H.R. 8 would criminalize the private transfer of firearms and mandate universal background checks, while H.R. 1446 would allow the federal government to delay the sale of a firearm for an indefinite period of time. Representative Rose believes the proposed changes to the current background check system would not deter criminals from obtaining firearms due to the fact that violent criminals overwhelmingly obtain their weapons illegally. Both bills would fail to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals while making it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and exercise their Second Amendment rights.
U.S. Representative John Rose is currently serving his second term representing Tennessee's Sixth Congressional District and resides in Cookeville with his wife, Chelsea, and their son, Guy. The Sixth District includes Cannon, Clay, Coffee, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, White, and Wilson counties as well as portions of Cheatham and Van Buren counties.
