U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI) today voted in support of the CHIPS and Science package, a bill that provides vital funding for the U.S. semiconductor industry. Since early last year, Rep. Meijer has been vocal in his support for the industry and the necessary resources to bolster it. The package includes Rep. Meijer’s bill, the National Supply Chain Database Act of 2021, and the Facilitating American-Built Semiconductors (FABS) Act of 2021, a bill Rep. Meijer helped introduce earlier this year. Earlier this week, the CHIPS and Science bill passed the Senate by a vote of 64-33. It now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law. Following his vote, Rep. Meijer issued the following statement:
“Today I joined GOP leaders of the Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committees to vote in favor of CHIPS Plus, which includes critical funding for the CHIPS Act, my FABS Act, my National Supply Chain Database Act, and other vital legislation to compete with China. Democrats played politics with China competition legislation for over a year, introducing bloated proposals like the America COMPETES Act instead of a focused package on semiconductor investment, research and development, and supply chains. China hates this bill because it will degrade the Chinese Communist Party’s ability to build chips under 28 nanometers and bolster advanced chip production in the United States, which is essential for our future competitiveness. I was more than happy to stand against the CCP today.”
The CHIPS Plus package includes:
- $50 billion to build, expand, or modernize U.S. facilities or equipment for chip fabrication and research and development
- $200 million for the CHIPS for America Workforce Education Fund
- $2 billion for the CHIPS for America Defense Fund
- $500 million for the CHIPS for America International Technology Security and Innovation Fund
- A 25 percent tax credit for semiconductor manufacturing
