Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) released the following statement on the House passage of the CHIPS and Science Act.
“I have witnessed firsthand the consequences of the semiconductor chip shortage for my constituents over the last couple of years – shifts have been cut, workers were laid off, plants have been shuttered, and our domestic manufacturing has slowed to a halt. Just last week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and several of my House colleagues joined me in Michigan’s 12th district to talk to UAW auto workers about how the chip shortage has impacted them. This investment will get thousands of Michiganders, and hardworking Americans across the country, back on the job, bring the supply chains home and keep them here, and deliver much needed support to our economy and workers. I am pleased this package includes critical legislation I introduced last year and have been pushing for everyday to provide $2 billion for mature technology nodes, which are essential to the automotive manufacturing industry.”

We’re at an inflection point for American manufacturing, industry, and innovation, and this legislation is a meaningful step to reduce our foreign dependency and restore our edge against our global competitors. The CHIPS and Science Act allocates $54.2 billion for American semiconductor chip manufacturing and public wireless supply chain innovation, including $2 billion for mature technology nodes, with priority for critical manufacturing industries such as the auto industry – a provision based on H.R.4704, the Mature Technology Node Resiliency and Manufacturing Act, introduced and advocated for by Congresswoman Dingell for many months. Dingell has previously led several letters to House leadership calling for full funding for the CHIPS for America Act.
