Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) was pleased to announce the inclusion of four of his community project funding requests in the Fiscal Year 2023 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development funding bill. The bill must now be approved by the full House Appropriations Committee.

“This funding bill supports programs that make investments in vital infrastructure that build our communities, support businesses, and create jobs. I was pleased to secure funding for projects that will improve water infrastructure, replace housing lost to natural disasters, and support youth and educational programs in Middle and Southwest Georgia,” said Congressman Bishop. “With these federal funds the City of Bainbridge, Columbus State University, Mt. Olive Community Outreach Center, and the Boys and Girls Club of Albany will have the support they need to help improve the quality of life in the communities that they serve.”

Through Congressman Bishop’s leadership, four projects were funded as part of this appropriations bill.

  • City of Bainbridge — Construction and labor costs for a 500,000-gallon elevated water tank servicing the Downrange Industrial Park and community of West Bainbridge, which will help keep and attract businesses as well as foster job creation.
  • Columbus State University — Engineering and design work in addition to start-up construction costs for the Columbus State University and Muscogee County School District STEAM Collaboration Center in Columbus, Georgia. The STEAM Collaboration Center will provide opportunities to Columbus State University (CSU) and Muscogee County School District (MCSD) students to learn more about robotics, engineering, coding, and 3D design/fabrication technologies by creating a space specifically tailored to the needs of educating the community in the field of STEAM.
  • Mt. Olive Community Outreach Center, Inc. — Help replenish the housing stock that was devastated by Hurricane Michael and two tornadoes. This funding will enable Mt. Olive Community Outreach Center, Inc. to renovate affordable housing units.
  • Boys and Girls Club — Update and renovate the Boys & Girls Clubs in Albany (Dougherty County), Montezuma (Macon County), and Plains (Sumter County). This funding would support and serve 25,000 youth in Southwest Georgia in these counties.
During the 2022 Fiscal Year (FY22), Congressman Bishop secured over $8 million in Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and other Related Agencies funding. The FY22 Appropriations aided several communities across the district.

The inclusion of this funding in the Appropriations Committee draft bill is the first step in the funding process. Congressman Bishop will continue to fight for this funding as the bill moves to the full House Appropriations Committee, during consideration by the U.S. House of Representatives, and in negotiations with the U.S. Senate.
