ATLANTA – Today Attorney General Chris Carr, Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner General John King, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith, and Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum held a joint press conference condemning Stacey Abrams’ active role in advocating for the Defund the Police movement and soft-on crime policies. The law enforcement leaders called on her to return or donate the $52,500 she has profited as a board member of an anti-police organization.
“When it comes to crime, Stacey Abrams and the Democrats are more interested in protecting criminals than protecting vulnerable communities,” said Attorney General Chris Carr. “Stacey makes hollow claims of supporting law enforcement, while serving on the board and taking a salary from an anti-police organization that seeks to defund and abolish the police. I call on Stacey Abrams to resign from the board of this anti-police organization and to return the more than $50,000 she has pocketed. Stacey Abrams and her hand-picked ticket cannot be trusted to support law enforcement and do not deserve to lead this state.”
“As a former beat cop, detective, and police chief, I know we need a governor who Backs the Blue in word and deed. Time and time again, Brian Kemp has proven to be a friend of law enforcement, a champion of public safety, and a man who wants to build a safer, stronger tomorrow for all of us,” said Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner General John King. “His opponent, Stacey Abrams, has proven to be none of the above. She has backed efforts to Defund the Police. She has backed policies that would lead to more crime and violence, and she has supported the radical left’s agenda of lawlessness and anarchy. Governor Kemp is trusted. He is proven, and he will continue to do his part to keep us safe.”
“In these uncertain times, it is critical we have leaders like Governor Kemp who stand with law enforcement and will fight to ensure we have the resources necessary to serve and protect,” said Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith. “Stacey Abrams’ continued service on the board of this anti-police group , her willingness to profit from it, and her support of soft-on-crime policies raise serious questions about whether officers throughout the state can trust her to back them as they put their lives on the line to keep communities safe. If she wants to show a commitment to a safer Georgia, Ms. Abrams should return the money she has taken from the anti-police movement and change course on her policies that put criminals first.”
“Sheriffs in this state know without a doubt that Governor Kemp stands with us and supports us,” said Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum. “Through serving on the board and taking money from an anti-police group, Stacey Abrams has shown that she does not have the backs of law enforcement. That is very dangerous for not only us, but for the citizens of Georgia. Stacey Abrams should immediately resign from the board of this anti-police organization and either return the over $50,000 she has taken from them or donate it to an organization supporting our officers. The men and women in Georgia law enforcement deserve to know if she supports us.”
Abrams currently serves on the governing board of the Marguerite Casey Foundation, a radical group that has called to “#DefundthePolice” and “#AbolishthePolice” and which, last year, increased its funding to anti-police initiatives with Abrams’ explicit support as a governing board member. The group has paid Abrams at least $52,500 to date, according to financial disclosures. The Kemp campaign called on Abrams to resign from the board last week.
On Monday, June 27, 102 Georgia sheriffs issued a joint statement condemning Abrams’ involvement in the anti-police organization, and called on her to disavow the soft-on-crime policies she has touted – including ending cash bail, lessening penalties for criminals, and scrubbing criminal records.
