Today U.S. Senator Patty Murray issued the following statement on the August 2 primary election in Washington state:

“I am grateful to everyone who has supported my campaign so far and more determined than ever to be a strong voice for Washington’s values and priorities in the other Washington because let’s be clear: this is not a normal midterm election. Our daughters and granddaughters have lost the right to make their own health care decisions, and today’s extreme Republican Party continues to push lies that the 2020 election was stolen, threatening our democracy.

“As Tiffany Smiley and the MAGA Republican Party try to roll back basic American rights, I will always stand up for our state’s values and priorities, and make sure the people of our state have a strong voice in the other Washington. Washington state voters can count on me to be someone who will tackle the biggest challenges families face today, from inflation to protecting our freedoms, with solutions—not soundbites. I’m focused on delivering tax cuts for middle-class families, strengthening our supply chains and investing in American manufacturing, and lowering everyday costs for the basics like prescription drugs and health care.

“We are full steam ahead to November, and I’ll be working hard to earn the support of voters from every part of Washington state.”

More about Patty:

In Congress, Patty has been a strong voice and effective advocate for working people and our kids and families. Murray’s first campaign ad highlighted her focus on building an economy that puts Washington state’s working people first, not giant corporations: middle-class tax cuts, American manufacturing, and lower everyday costs for families.

Right now, Patty is fighting to pass critical legislation to lower the cost of prescription drugs and health care while making a historic investment in climate action. Patty is also a leader in the right to protect women’s health care, and recently the Washington Post characterized her as, “the single most effective Democratic combatant against Republican attempts to restrict abortion and otherwise roll back reproductive health-care rights on Capitol Hill.”

Patty is one of the few leaders who has been able to deliver meaningful legislation to help people and solve problems. Last year, the New York Times noted Patty deployed the “legislative muscle and deep experience to deliver on [President Biden’s] bold promises” in passing the American Rescue Plan, which has helped the economy recover all of the jobs lost since the pandemic.

Patty also has a strong and especially notable record of negotiating major bipartisan solutions on veterans issues, the opioid crisis, workforce training and so much more–all while standing firm for progressive values. As a leader for bipartisan progress in Congress, Murray helped negotiate the most comprehensive Congressional response to the opioid crisis under the Trump administration and also passed historic bipartisan legislation to ban surprise medical bills into law.
