Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement regarding the passing of Samuel Sandoval, one of the last remaining Navajo Code Talkers whose efforts were instrumental in America’s victory in the Pacific Theater during World War II:

“I am sad to learn of the passing of Samuel Sandoval, a true American hero. In spite of the painful history our country has with its indigenous peoples, Samuel and the Navajo Code Talkers honorably answered the call of their country in its darkest hours helping to fight tyranny, win the war, and preserve the freedoms we enjoy today. Samuel is a reminder to us all of the intrinsic value that all individuals have and can contribute to our nation’s greatness.”
