Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement regarding the passing of former National Basketball Association (NBA) legend and Presidential Medal of Freedom awardee, Bill Russell:
“Bill Russell was a game changer, both on and off the court. He lifted up others as he lifted himself up, redefined the role of the basketball center, broke barriers as the first African American coach in the NBA, and used his platform of accomplishment and fame to support the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout his life, he stood on the frontline with those who stood against prejudice and injustice. America has lost a giant — both literally and figuratively — whose candor confronted our country’s shortcomings and whose renowned laughter could lift our spirits. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.”
