Broken by Axios this afternoon, Pennsylvania’s 8th District Congressman Matt Cartwright was exposed for violating ethics rules by starring in a television ad for one of his largest donors. The ad, which aired both in and outside Pennsylvania for multiple weeks, was recorded in his congressional office while Cartwright wore his congressional pin. Soon after it broke, congressional watchdog the Functional Government Initiative announced that they would formally be filing an ethics complaint against Cartwright for this egregious violation.
The ad was for multi-million dollar law firm Parker Waichman, Jerrold Parker and his wife have donated tens of thousands of dollars to Cartwright during his time in Congress.
Statement from Bognet for Congress Campaign Manager Joe Desilets:
Matt Cartwright was already named one of the worst ethics violators in all of Congress, an impressive feat that I’m sure every corrupt politician would be proud of, but this latest ethics violation takes the cake. Cartwright has sold himself and his office to the highest bidder, enriched himself and his family through his office, hidden assets worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from congressional disclosures, all while failing to pay his taxes for the second time in four years. A man without any moral or ethical compass cannot be trusted and cannot be allowed to continue to serve the people of Northeast Pennsylvania in Congress.
