Congressman Al Green Supports Budget Reconciliation for COVID Relief

Texas

(Washington, DC) – On Wednesday, February 3, 2021, Congressman Al Green released the following statement, indicating his support for H.Con.Res. 11:

“The American people have endured enough: record unemployment, business closures, food insecurity, increased monthly expenses due to rising food prices and COVID-related school closures, as well as inadequate access to health care, including coronavirus testing and vaccine distribution,” stated Congressman Al Green. “While Congress has passed vital legislation to help our constituents address immediate needs exacerbated during this crisis, the previous measures provided a stop-gap remedy for a chronic problem. President Biden’s American Rescue Plan confronts many issues posed by the pandemic by providing: a national vaccine program and increased access to testing; funding to reopen schools; expansion of emergency paid sick leave; extended unemployment insurance; renters assistance and housing assistance for houseless persons; extended nutrition assistance; additional child care assistance; and tax credits for low-wage earners.”

Congressman Al Green added, “In 2017, Republicans passed a nearly $1.5 trillion tax break for the wealthy. They weren’t experiencing pain and suffering or possible eviction or the threat of missed mortgage payments, but they were given a break. I urge my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to see this relief package as a tax break for working class Americans.”

“We cannot promote the notion that the working class can do more with less while the wealthy need do more to do more. It is time for us to save this country and save those who are suffering. I support the use of budget reconciliation to get critical relief to the American people as quickly as possible.”
