Matthew Hoh, presumed Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate from North Carolina, expressed anger and sadness at the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court. 

Hoh said: “This is not a surprise to many of us, and that’s not simply because of the leaked decision by the Court last month. The Republicans, for fifty years, have prioritized stripping women of their rights through their coalitions, financing, campaigning and organization. Meanwhile, the Democrats have been feckless, ineffectual and cynical, saying they will protect women while fundraising but doing nothing to deliver that protection when in power in Congress and the White House. This destruction by the Republicans and betrayal by the Democrats of a woman’s right to an abortion and all forms of healthcare is symptomatic of the larger degradation and disregard for human rights -civil, economic and political- by the two-party system in favor of money and special interests. This is why we must disrupt and remake our political system. Too many people have died and suffered due to the corrupt and money-beholden status quo, and today’s decision will ensure more will die and suffer.”  

The United States government has waged war on women’s bodies for decades. With the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, the small amount of legal protection afforded to people in many parts of the U.S. who are seeking abortions will be eliminated. The Matthew Hoh for Senate campaign calls on federal, state, and local governments to fully legalize abortion and protect the reproductive rights of all people. We believe abortion is healthcare and that healthcare is a human right. We support the following policies:

• Sign bills into law that protect all people’s reproductive rights instead of relying on the Supreme Court.
• Repeal all bills that punish or prosecute abortion seekers or providers (e.g., so-called “heartbeat” bills).
• Crack down on crisis pregnancy centers, which provide dangerous misinformation about abortions to vulnerable pregnant people.
• Protect abortion providers and clinics from violence and terrorism.
• Repeal the Hyde Amendment, which blocks federal funding for abortion services.
• Provide funding to build and operate abortion clinics in all states.
• Implement single-payer universal health care (i.e., Medicare for All) and provide all forms of reproductive healthcare.
• End abstinence-only education. Implement comprehensive and age-appropriate sex education curricula that teach children safe sex, birth control, consent, abortion, etc.
• Prevent workplace discrimination, wage cuts, and job termination for pregnant workers.
• Require all employers to provide paid parental/family leave.Ensure equal access to care for all regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status.
• Drastically reduce the high maternal mortality rate among Black pregnant women in particular.
