(Houston, TX) — On Wednesday, May 25, 2022, Congressman Al Green released the following statement:
“On this day two years ago, people across the length and breadth of our nation answered the clarion call to reform policing and demanded justice for Mr. George Floyd. In the wake of Mr. Floyd’s tragic murder at the knee of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, peaceful protestation revealed to the world that Black lives indeed matter and have always mattered. Because I am the son of the segregated South, I am intimately familiar with the experiences so many Black men like Mr. Floyd face at the hands of law enforcement all too often in our country. Mr. Floyd, a Houston and Third Ward native, did not deserve to die with a knee on his neck for at least eight minutes, while begging for his mother and crying out that he could not breathe. While his death has become a symbol of resistance, a catalyst for change, has galvanized public opinion of our criminal justice system, and become a seminal moment in time, much work remains to be done to deliver the full accountability Black Americans have been demanding for decades. Black Lives Matter.”
