The White House today announced it is reallocating $8 million for the Georgia Port Authority (GPA) to address congestion at the Port of Savannah.
US Representative Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) applauded the move, which will create an inland yard in Atlanta and relieve congestion in Savannah.
“This is an important first step towards addressing congestion affecting Savannah,” said Carter. “I applaud the Georgia Ports Authority for their creativity in proposing this solution and hope it will serve as a model for ports across the country.”
According to the GPA, shipping containers are lingering as much as three times longer in ports due to breakdowns in the global supply chain. These extended wait times harm business owners and consumers alike, with many small businesses unable to assume normal operations.
“While an important first step, we need to make sure it is not the last. I stand ready to work with President Biden and my colleagues in Congress to advance sound economic policies and targeted investments to ease the supply chain crisis we face,” said Carter.
