WHEREAS, it is paramount for all Alaskans to understand the need for and the effectiveness of affordable, accessible, and high-quality substance abuse treatment; and
WHEREAS, substance abuse and co-occurring mental disorders and co-existing physical illnesses are major public health problems that adversely impact thousands of Alaskans of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds, in all communities; and
WHEREAS, addiction harms not only the individual, but families and communities as well. By seeking help, individuals who experience substance abuse disorders can embark on a new path toward improved health, well-being, and happy relationships, and lead more productive and fulfilling lives; and
WHEREAS, with appropriate and effective treatment, those who struggle with substance abuse can and do get better, and they must receive access to the services they need in order to recover; and
WHEREAS, we recognize and honor the service of first responders, healthcare providers, and all family, friends, and advocates striving against addiction. These dedicated workers and volunteers deserve our gratitude and support; and
WHEREAS, we can help our fellow Alaskans struggling with substance abuse disorders by implementing preventative measures, recognizing the signs of a problem, and guiding those in need to effective treatment and recovery support services.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mike Dunleavy, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim September, 2022 as:
Recovery Month
in Alaska, encourage all Alaskans have compassion for those who are struggling with addiction; to foster an open, honest, and supportive dialogue about the effects of substance abuse in their communities; and to support programs that improve the circumstances for fellow Alaskans striving for recovery.
