Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township) announced that the House passed three amendments he authored as part of H.R. 8294, a package of appropriations bills to fund federal agencies.

“These amendments advance some of my top priorities as a member of Congress: defeating the climate crisis, protecting voting rights and expanding affordable housing,” said Congressman Andy Levin. “At a time when so many folks are struggling with the devastating impacts of climate change, facing restrictions on their fundamental right to participate in their democracy and feeling the effects of an unaffordable housing market, Congress must do more to help Michiganders and Americans across the country.”

Congressman Levin’s amendments would:

  • Prioritize the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant program to fund projects that will decarbonize and electrify our public transportation sector and help the country achieve net-zero carbon emissions;
  • Require funds for the Election Assistance Commission to be used to pay for the wages of election poll workers so that our elections workers can ensure that Americans can vote safely and securely; and
  • Ensure that Congress is adequately funding federal affordable housing tenants’ rights to organize so that they can participate in activities that will improve their lives and those of their communities.
H.R. 8294 consists of five pieces of legislation to fund a number of federal departments and agencies. This government funding package will secure critical investments in a range of key priorities for Michigan communities:

  • Creating good-paying jobs by upgrading Michigan’s roads, bridges, public transit, rail, airports and water infrastructure.
  • Combating the climate crisis by expanding renewable energy, strengthening local resilience against extreme weather and spurring new, innovative technology.
  • Bolstering Michigander’s health and economic security by investing in federal nutrition programs, Michigan small businesses, stronger consumer protection and expanded affordable housing.
  • Honoring our servicemembers by investing in VA health care, military housing, childcare for military families and mental health services.
  • Strengthening our nation’s food supply by supporting Michigan farmers, expanding agricultural research and investing in land conservation.
