Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township), member of the House Education and Labor Committee released the following statement following the announcement of President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan:

“I applaud President Biden for his plan to provide up to $20,000 in federal student loan forgiveness for millions of Americans and extend the repayment pause until December 31, 2022.

“Americans collectively owe $1.6 trillion in federal student loan debt, affecting nearly 43.4 million American workers. Studies indicate that 60 percent of all jobs in the U.S. economy require postsecondary education and training. Many workers saddled with student loan debt went back to school to qualify for these jobs, but entered a job market where wages are outpaced by their student loan debt. As a result, individuals have put off making big life decisions like buying homes or starting families.

“Today’s announcement from President Biden is a historic step towards providing relief to millions of Americans and helping kickstart our recovery with economic, racial and gender justice at the center. I am proud to have fought in Congress for this relief alongside many of my colleagues and organizers on the ground pushing every day to make this happen.

“I look forward to continuing to fight to alleviate the impact of student debt on generations of Americans and to make college free for all through legislation like my America’s College Promise Act. Let’s go!”
