Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township), member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere Affairs, led several of his colleagues in a letter to the Chief Executive Officers of social media companies, Meta, Twitter and TikTok, urging them to combat disinformation on their platforms about the upcoming Constitutional vote in Chile.

“We write to you to express grave and urgent concerns about disinformation being shared on your social media platforms about the proposed Chilean constitution, on which Chileans will vote on September 4, 2022,” wrote the lawmakers. "We strongly implore you to act with urgency to combat corrupt disinformation campaigns that undermine a fair and democratic process.”

The lawmakers continued, “Meanwhile, despite your understanding of your companies’ power to influence major political events, we are extremely concerned that your corporations are not taking sufficient actions to combat this disinformation.”

The letter was signed by Jim McGovern, Chair of the House Rules Committee; Carolyn Maloney, Chair of the House Oversight Committee; Jesus P. “Chuy” Garcia; and Cori Bush, Member of the House Oversight Committee.
