Goes to Citizens HQ to Call on DeSantis to Lower Rates and Expand Coverage
Charlie Crist, candidate for governor of Florida, joined Rep. Tracie Davis, Senator Audrey Gibson, and Senator Tony Hill for a press conference slamming Ron DeSantis for Citizens Insurance rate hikes.
As hundreds of thousands of Floridians are getting kicked off their private property insurance coverage, DeSantis raised rates for Citizens Insurance, the last resort for many Floridians. This follows DeSantis taking millions of dollars from the insurance industry and ignoring the storm clouds brewing in the property insurance market.
DeSantis’s property insurance crisis has seen average rates doubled and insurers dropping coverage for thousands at the height of hurricane season. DeSantis’s rate hikes for Citizens Insurance went into effect this month.
In stark contrast to DeSantis, as governor, Crist was instrumental in taking on the big insurance companies, and lowering rates by 10 percent, and has committed to tackling the property insurance crisis when elected.
At the press conference, Crist said:
“We are here today because Ron DeSantis is ignoring a property insurance emergency in Florida. Hundreds of thousands of Floridians are getting dumped by their insurance companies. Thousands more are at risk of losing their coverage. Premiums are through the roof – literally doubled. And now, Floridians have nowhere else to go but Citizens during the middle of hurricane season — yet DeSantis is raising those rates too.
“We need to reverse the DeSantis rate hikes and expand the coverage limit on Citizens before Floridians lose their homes. When the private market is on life support, looking out for your fellow Floridians is not right vs. left — it’s right vs. wrong.
”You deserve to be able to afford your insurance. And you deserve a governor who will fight for you. For lower rates. For stability. I was that governor before and I’ll be that governor again.”
