Today, during their winter meeting in Salt Lake City, the Republican National Committee passed a resolution declaring that the violent January 6th insurrection was “legitimate political discourse.” The Utah Democratic Party issued the following statement in response:
“The Republican Party has once again proven that it is the party of insurrectionists. They are determined to erase and white-wash the violence that took place at the U.S. Capitol just over a year ago, and they’ve now decided to label it as ‘legitimate political discourse’. That’s right, the GOP has now flat-out endorsed the actions of the violent mob that stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn a democratic election. Let’s be clear: smearing feces on the walls of the Capitol is not legitimate political discourse. Threatening to kill the Vice President and members of Congress is not legitimate political discourse. Seeking to violently overturn a free and fair election is not legitimate political discourse.
The actions of those who stormed the Capitol on January 6th are despicable and anti-American. A political party that refuses to acknowledge that simple fact cannot be trusted to govern, plain and simple.”
