U.S. Congressman Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.), Chief Deputy Whip for the House Republican Conference, released the following statement on Governor Brian Kemp’s decision to end Georgia’s participation in federal pandemic unemployment programs, effective Saturday, June 26, 2021.
“Getting people back to work plays a major role in Georgia’s economic success, and I commend Governor Kemp’s decision to end enhanced unemployment benefits to address workforce shortages,” Ferguson said. “Reports indicate that there are 8.1 million job openings. With the successful vaccine rollout from Operation Warp Speed and the CDC’s rollback of mask recommendations, there is no reason to continue these federal assistance benefits that disincentivize folks from going back to work.”
“Georgia is open and the best state to do business for a reason, yet the biggest challenge our small businesses are still facing is rebuilding their workforce when their employees are receiving a bonus to stay at home. It’s time to put the pedal to the metal in our economy and restore the dignity of work. By continuing to invest in workforce development and maintaining a welcoming business climate, I’m confident Georgia's best days are still ahead of us.”
