Representative Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.) introduced H.R. 7857, the Connect America Now (CAN) Act. This legislation would incentivize rural-focused internet service providers with tax advantages that would allow them to buy underinvested networks and expand their gigabit capability. It also provides states with another financing mechanism for broadband infrastructure.
“As our country continues to battle the global pandemic, broadband access has become increasingly important. Broadband is an essential 21st century infrastructure, but many rural communities do not have access to this critical tool and the opportunities it provides,” said Rep. Ferguson. “Broadband delivers important tools to our healthcare system through telehealth and connects patients directly to their healthcare providers from the security of their own homes.”
“As many businesses move to telework to allow for social distancing during this global pandemic, broadband empowers employees in rural communities to participate in the workforce. Also in the event there is any disruption to our education system, it is critically important to give students the ability for online and distance learning.”
