Washington, DC—June 16, 2022....Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3), a member of the House Appropriations Committee and former Chairman of the House Budget Committee, was named a 2022 “Fiscal Hero” by The Campaign to Fix the Debt for his longtime commitment to putting America on a better fiscal and economic path.
Congressman Womack said, “Arkansans and Americans have no choice other than balancing their checkbooks. Yet, the federal government doesn’t obey those rules. The result: out-of-control spending ushering in decades-high inflation and debt and deficits at untenable levels. The futures of our children and grandchildren are at stake, and we have a moral obligation to get our fiscal house in order. I remain resolute in leading efforts to make the tough—but necessary—decisions to chart a responsible path forward and ensure America’s future prosperity.”
“With inflation at a 40-year high, the national debt reaching near-record levels, and our major trust funds facing looming insolvency over the next decade, our country faces daunting fiscal challenges. Addressing our fiscal challenges requires policymakers in Washington who distinguish themselves by their leadership and political courage, and Rep. Womack is doing just that. We applaud his commitment to getting our nation on a more sustainable fiscal path,” said Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and head of Fix the Debt.
Womack has consistently advocated for solutions to fix the broken budget and appropriations process, which has failed the American people for too long. He co-chaired the Joint Select Committee on Budget and Appropriations Process Reform and introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation to modernize and streamline current processes. Additionally, he called for moving to a biennial budget, setting realistic deadlines for Congress to complete its budget and appropriations work, and requiring a joint Budget Committee hearing on the Fiscal State of the Nation. The FY2019 budget Womack authored as the Chairman of the House Budget Committee was the last comprehensive fiscal blueprint produced by the House Budget Committee.
Fiscal Heroes are awarded each Congress to recognize policymakers working to improve the nation's fiscal situation and fix the budget process. Fiscal Heroes have distinguished themselves by pushing their party leaders to make debt a priority, leading bipartisan efforts to work through policy options to fix the debt and the budget process, taking responsible votes, participating in fiscally focused events, using meetings to engage and educate constituents, delivering floor speeches to raise awareness about the issue, advocating to keep tough choices on the table, and introducing legislation to improve the budget process and the nation's fiscal position.
Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
