Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA02) is pleased to announce that the Columbus, Georgia, Consolidated Government has been awarded a grant of $400,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. These funds will expand the substance abuse treatment capacity in the Muscogee County Veterans Treatment Court.
“Many veterans turn to substance abuse as they cope with combat-related mental illness and face challenges readjusting to civilian life,” said Congressman Bishop. “Unfortunately, sometimes this gets them caught up in our criminal justice system. I am glad that these funds will help Columbus direct our veterans towards Veterans Treatment Courts, whose knowledgeable judges can help facilitate their rehabilitation and connect them with veteran peer groups as well as treatment resources.”
“We appreciate the work Congressman Bishop continues to do for Columbus,” said Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson. “Substance abuse and mental wellness issues challenge every community and this grant will go a long way to help us continue to address those critical areas.”
The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment is part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which was developed by Congress in 1992. The Center continues to work toward reducing drug and alcohol abuse and improving behavioral health across the United States.
