Democratic Congressional Candidate in Southwest Florida, Dr. Cindy Banyai, speaks out against leaked opinion indicating the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade and Casey.
“Conservative activist justices inappropriately appointed to the Supreme Court are about to send the United States back 50 years. The overturning of the right to medical privacy and abortion care should alarm all Americans.” Dr. Banyai states.
According to Pew Research from 2021, the public opinion on abortion legality has been nearly the same since 1995, with around 60% of people believe it should be legal in nearly all circumstances and 39% believing it should be illegal.
“What we are seeing with SCOTUS is an aberration of our country’s democratic principles. Nearly all our institutions and processes are based on majority rule, with ample ability of the minority to have a voice. We were never intended to have minoritarian rule. Activist justices promoted and appointed by far right leaders have politicized the Supreme Court, threatening the freedom of women and trust in our institutions.” Dr. Banyai, a published expert in public administration, explains.
“I stand firmly in opposition to overturning the super precedent of Roe v. Wade. I believe people have the right to choose when and where to start a family. I believe people have a right to medical privacy and decisions about medical care should be made by a person and their medical practitioner, not pre-emptively made by the government.” Dr. Banyai affirms.
Dr. Banyai goes on “We must codify the provisions of abortion care and medical privacy into law at the state and national level. We must end all barriers to access that disproportionately hurt the poorest and most vulnerable among us. We must elect pro-choice candidates at every level. Our freedom and democracy are at stake.”
Dr. Banyai invites all supporters of freedom to join her this evening, May 3, from 5:00pm outside the courthouse in Fort Myers (corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and US 41) to protest the roll back of our rights. Many other local groups and activists will join so we can raise our voices together.
Dr. Cindy Banyai is a 2022 Democratic Candidate for Congress.
