Dr. Cindy Banyai, Democratic Nominee for Congress for Southwest Florida, was arrested today along with hundreds of other demonstrators as part of a planned sit-in on the street in front of the Supreme Court. She coordinated with national organizations and local activists to take part in the historic rally.
“It was really inspirational to join together with people from across the US to raise our objection to the Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs that has stripped us of our right to body autonomy and medical privacy.” Dr. Banyai said.
Dr. Banyai goes on “We know a majority of Americans believe people should have access to abortion care, but far right extremists in our government and judiciary decided to put their views ahead of the American people’s.”
“I came to DC to show my commitment to making access to abortion care law, as well as marriage equality and access to contraception, which is also threatened by the Dobbs ruling. Enough is enough when it comes back to rolling back our rights.” Dr. Banyai stated.
As covered by multiple national and international news outlets, Dr. Banyai along with several hundred others sat at the intersection of Constitution and First in defiance of police orders. The protesters peacefully chanted and sang while one by one being arrested by Capitol Police. Dr. Banyai, still in a wheelchair with a broken leg stemming from an incident where she jumped off a boat to save her daughter from being swept out by the tide in May, can be seen in the front of the sit-in crowd. She was peacefully taken into police custody and cooperated with their processing of the infraction. She will remain in DC until she is able to pay the fine for the offense tomorrow.
Dr. Cindy Banyai is the 2022 Democratic Nominee for US House of Representatives Florida 19, spanning coastal Southwest Florida from Cape Coral to Marco Island. She is a mom and a small business owner. She is fighting for our water, our health, and our community. She wants to create a Southwest Florida where the sun shines on everyone.
