Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) supported three bills that would ensure an accurate census as well as greater federal government transparency and accountability.

“Americans are well-served when the federal government has the best and brightest working on the public’s behalf, free from undue political interference and protected from retaliation should they expose wrongdoing,” said Congressman Bishop. “They also have to work with accurate census data which not only determines people’s representation in government, at all levels, but is also used to determine how federal programs and resources are distributed. These bills help create a more accurate, accountable, and transparent government in which Americans can be confident.”

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the three bills as part of a series of votes today. These bills are:

  • H.R. 302, the Preventing a Patronage System Act of 2021, which would help preserve Federal employee due process rights and civil service protections as well as prevent any administration from firing qualified experts and replacing them with political loyalists.
  • H.R. 2988, the Whistleblower Protection Improvement Act, which would modify and expand whistleblower protections for Federal employees. These protections promote public accountability and integrity and prohibit agencies from conducting retaliatory investigations against whistleblowers.
  • H.R. 8326, the Ensuring a Fair and Accurate Census Act, which would safeguard the integrity of the Census Bureau and accuracy of Census data by enhancing Congressional oversight of changes to the Census, protecting the Census process from undue political interference, and ensuring that questions included in the Census have been researched, studied, and tested according to established statistical policies and procedures.
