Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Frank Pallone (NJ-06) issued the following statement on the passage of H.R. 5, the Equality Act in the U.S. House of Representatives:
“Passage of the Equality Act in the House of Representatives is a significant milestone for civil rights,” Congressman Pallone said. “It’s unacceptable that someone has the right to marry the person they love one day and can be fired the next day because of who they love or their gender identity. As a longtime advocate for LGBTQ equality, it is an honor to support and vote for this legislation to rid our country of this terrible discrimination and establish equal protections for all Americans.”
The Equality Act amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in education, employment, housing, credit, federal jury service, public accommodations, and the use of federal funds.
