Biden’s Plan Ensures Polluters Once Again Pay for Superfund Cleanup, Which Pallone Has Advocated For Decades

Long Branch, NJ – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) issued the following statement today after President Biden announced his transformational American Jobs Plan:

“There is no better way to rebuild our economy for the future than to modernize our badly aging infrastructure, and President Biden’s American Jobs Plan is exactly what our nation needs right now to revitalize our communities. The President’s bold proposal will also combat the climate crisis by reducing carbon pollution and moving us towards a clean energy future.

“The President’s plan aligns with the LIFT America Act, which I introduced earlier this month with all Energy and Commerce Committee Democrats. Our legislation invests in clean and efficient energy, safe drinking water, expanded access to broadband, Brownfield cleanups, and improving our nation’s health care infrastructure.

“Superfund sites threaten public and environmental health in New Jersey and across the country, and those sites could be cleaned up faster with adequate funding. I’m thrilled to see the President supports reinstating the ‘polluter pays’ taxes so that the very industries most responsible for polluting our land and water are held responsible for cleaning them up.  For years, I have introduced the Superfund Polluter Pays Act, which would reauthorize the original Superfund fees and make polluters, not taxpayers, pay for the costs of these cleanups.  The President’s plan, like my legislation, would reduce pressures on the federal budget and lead to faster cleanup of these toxic sites.

“I commend the President for including a national Clean Electricity Standard in his plan that meets the same aggressive targets of the CLEAN Future Act and the investments necessary to make it a reality.  The rest of the world is already embarking on a major transition to clean technology, and this plan positions us to not only compete but to lead the pack.

“Over the last year our nation has suffered tremendous loss from both the pandemic and the severe economic downturn. I’m hopeful that Congress can come together quickly to pass transformational infrastructure legislation that will fulfill President Biden’s commitment to Build Back Better so we can create millions of new jobs, combat the climate crisis, and ensure no community is left behind.”
