Washington, DC– Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) voted today for the Right to Contraception Act, which makes clear in federal law that individuals and married couples have the right to access contraception. This legislation will also protect healthcare providers' ability to provide contraceptives and relevant information to their patients.

This bill came to the House floor in response to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas stating in his concurring opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization that the 1965 case, Griswold v. Connecticut, which outlined the right to contraception, should be reconsidered.

"It is hard to believe that in the year 2022 we are debating the right to contraception. The vast majority of Americans understand and value the healthcare, family planning, and economic benefits contraception provides and the important impact it has on opportunities for women in the workforce," said Rep. Sherrill. "While the partisan Supreme Court vies to undo decades-long legal precedent, we are taking proactive steps to ensure they cannot further strip Americans of their rights and freedoms. With this vote, we make clear we will not go back."

This week, Rep. Sherrill voted to protect marriage equality, which would protect interracial and same-sex marriage. Rep. Sherrill also voted to pass the Women's Health Protection Actto defend women's reproductive rights and the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act to extend legal protections to Americans who utilize their constitutional freedom to travel to another state to seek an abortion.
