Today, Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) released the below statement following the Supreme Court decision on West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency:

"The Clean Air Act and the Environmental Protection Agency have worked over 50 years to reduce pollution in America, delivering reductions in pollutant emissions, including Lead emissions and Sulfur Dioxide. Today’s ruling from the Supreme Court threatens the EPA’s ability to continue working to improve health and quality of life by cleaning up our air.

Climate change is the existential threat facing our world today, and the Supreme Court's ruling is a disastrous setback in our nation's decades-long effort to combat it. This decision puts the health and safety of the environment and our communities at risk.

This is not an issue that we can afford to ignore, and Iowa’s seen tremendous benefits from its work to be a leader in combating climate change by investing in wind power. We've seen the impacts of climate change right in our own backyards – with increasingly severe weather events like the 2019 historic floods and the 2020 derecho – that have destroyed communities, devastated farmers, and claimed innocent lives.

The debate is long over: climate change is a real and serious threat and this dangerous decision will reduce our ability to respond. I remain committed to supporting significant climate policy that meets the needs of the moment and provides economic opportunity as we build a clean energy future."
